FC headed to Tampines One for lunch today in Sushi Express. Tampines is a very bustling place and has 3 malls at the train station!

Sushi Express is from Taiwan. In Chinese, the name is “Zhen Xian”, which is “striving to be fresh” in English.

Sushi is served conveyor belt style and everything is at sgd 1.50 (but you need to pay service and gst on top of this price) ! This makes it easy for the price conscious consumers as there is no need to check the prices for different types of sushi! Green tea is complimentary. Help yourself to the tea bags at the table.

There are many types of sushi to choose from. FC had her favorites scallop, salmon (various styles) and uni sushi. All were fresh. Scallop and salmon were sliced thickly. FC had 6 plates and were quite full. Overall bill was about 10 dollars. Good choice for sushi.

Bay Sushi

********** Our Say **********

Rating: 4/5
Recommended Order: Sushi Set
General comments: Food is fresh, and food service is quick
Location: The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, walk from either Bayfront or Downtown MRT stations

********** ********** **********

Sometimes, on good afternoons, we make our way across the river in search of a good lunch at the posh Marina Bay Sands.

On this day, Fat Chub, with a little Guest Chub found her way to Bay Sushi, which is run by the same guys who run Todai, an international buffet restaurant also located at Marina Bay Sands.

They have a varied selection of lunch bento sets at prices starting from $15++. The restaurant was about 70% full on during weekday lunch hour, which is pretty impressive for the location.

Fat Chub had the Sushi Set. After all, if a restaurant has “Sushi” proudly declared in its name, the sushi has to be good, right?

The set comes with a bowl of udon, 8 pieces of sushi, a chawanmushi, some fried items (prawns and vegetables), salad, pickles, miso soup and fruits nicely presented on a rectangular platter. The dishes came quickly, which is always a plus when you have a timeline to meet in the office in the afternoon.

The sushi was fresh and the chawanmushi was smooth and lightly flavoured with a good silky texture.

The salad was dressed in citrus, non-oily sauce, which was very refreshing and good for cleansing the palate in between each piece of sushi.

In summary, the set is value for money as there is a satisfying variety on items in each bento and each item is well prepared. It is definitely a place we will visit again.

Standing Sushi Bar

The Chubs are not just about lunches. Sometimes we are about dinners too. It happened that today was a hectic day at work which stretched into the evening and when we heard the rumbly of the tummy, it was time to look for a dinner place right in the heart of the CBD.

We settled on the Standing Sushi Bar which is situated in a not too prominent location just under the escalator leading up to Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1.

On a Thursday evening, there was already a healthy crowd of diners in the small restaurant and we were lucky to get one of the last 2 available tables when we arrived at about 8 pm.

We were in a hurry so we decided on their dinner sets.

This is the Unagi set which costs $22 before service charge and gst.

This is the Take set which costs $25 before service charge and gst. Bo Chub ordered this with the rationale that this being a sushi shop, sushi has to be their pride and their best item on the menu.

image

Both sets came with a side of a salad drizzled generously with Japanese dressing. We like the fact that the salad was crunchy but the dressing was a tad salty.

Bo Chub likes her sushi cold, or at least cool (personal preference) and was thus a little disappointed when the sushi arrived at room temperature, indicating that it might have been sitting out on the counter for while. However, most of the fish melted in the mouth easily and were pleasant to eat.

The Take set also comes with 2 pieces of salmon roll.

Overall the ambience was good as it was situated in a quiet and less frequented part of the busy Marina Bay Financial Centre. In terms of taste, the food is comparable to some standing Sushi bars in Tokyo, which typically offer quick budget meals for the average salaryman in a hurry to get back to the office. It’s a good place to go if you are looking for a quick meal fix but certainly not the place to be if you are looking for a gastronomical experience.
