Ocean Curry Fish Head

On today’s lunch menu was Curry Fish Head.

When one is craving for curry fish head in the middle of a hungry work day in the CBD, one inevitably thinks of Ocean Curry Fish Head. If you are lucky enough to be working in the vicinity of Amoy Street, it is but a short walk away. For the rest of us, however, there is always the trusty old MRT that will take us there. Take the Downtown Line to Telok Ayer Station, exit from Exit A and make your way down the busy Telok Ayer Street. You know you’ve found the place when you see a long line of piece queueing at a busy corner coffee shop.

This was the queue that greeted us when we arrived at about 12.30pm.

The good news is, if you’re here for the curry fish head, you do not have to join the queue. After you’ve found yourself a table, wave a friendly aunty over and make your order of curry fish head and your selection of accompanying dishes from the wide array of dishes they have on display.

Little Chub braved the hungry crowd to capture the following pictures of the selection of side dishes on display.

The selection of dishes is plentiful and appetising enough that there is a long line of people queueing just for a plate of rice with a few side dishes to complement it.

We opted for the following side dishes with a small curry fish head for a table of 4.

Some non spicy greens to start the day and to complement the spiciness of the curry.

This was done very nicely and it wasn’t sandy, indicating that they had spent considerable effort to ensure that their greens are thoroughly washed.

Bitter gourd stir fried with egg for that extra nutrition.

This dish, nicknamed 美人鱼, or mermaid in Chinese is one of their most popular dishes, and no wonder. It was crispy and tasty without being too spicy.

The star of the show was of course the curry fish head. We had a small bowl, which contains half a fish head cooked with vegetables such as eggplants, tomatoes and lady’s fingers.

At first taste, you catch a tinge of sourness in the curry. However it is not an unpleasant sourness but one that goes well with the spiciness of the curry and that is probably the result of the generous toppings of pineapple slices.

The curry was served bubbling which means it was freshly taken off the stove.

One thing worth mentioning at this stall is the sambal chilli. It is a great accompaniment to the rice and good for people like me (Bo Chub) who aren’t fans of the sharp stinging spiciness of raw chilli.

At the end of the meal, clean up with the wet tissues provided for each diner and you are again satisfied and fresh for the rest of the day at the office.

Verdict: 4/5

When we are craving curry fish head, this must certainly be one of the first shops that come to mind. The curry is tasty, the fish is fresh, and there is a wonderful array of side dishes to choose from to suit the palettes of all the diners at the table. The waiting time of about 15 minutes during peak lunch hour is also a big plus point. We spent about $45 for a table of 4, which is very reasonable for a lunch that is filling and satisfying. Needless to say, we will certainly be back for more curry fish head when the next craving hits.
